My Vegan Oils of Choice for Stretched Ears

When you are stretching your ears, massaging your lobes with oil is essential in promoting blood flow and keeping them healthy and supple. The thought of using emu oil creeps me out, so I stick to two vegan oils: coconut and jojoba.

Coconut Oil can be used in place of olive oil, in many vegan chocolate desserts and, like with jojoba oil, for a variety of homemade beauty products. Simply Google these two oils and you'll be surprised how versatile they truly are.

Most websites which specialise in jewellery for stretched ears sell jojoba oil. However, if you're frugal like I am, paying $5 for a tiny bottle (1 fluid ounce - 30ml) seems a tad steep. My beloved iHerb has come to be rescue on more than one occasion, and this situation is no different; they stock jojoba oil at a fraction of the price.

If you want to use the jojoba oil exclusively for your stretched ears, the Now Foods, Solutions, Jojoba Oil, 4 fl oz (118 ml) for $9.93 (or $11.46 for the organic version) is perfect.

However, if you use jojoba for more than just your ears the Now Foods, Jojoba Oil, 16 fl oz gives you the best deal, at $27.53 for a whopping 473ml - a saving of $51 compared to buying equal amounts from a jewellery website.

With coconut oil. you have quite a few options. Yes, buying in bulk is the best value for money, but depdning on your needs, the Cococare, 100% Coconut Oil, 4 oz (110 g) for $2.86 may be the better choice and will last for quite some time.

For those of you who cook with coconut oil, a larger bottle is best, and simply cut out a chunk and keep in a separate container, to use only for your ears. My coconut oil of choice is Jarrow Formulas, Certified Organic Coconut Oil, 32 oz (908 g) for $14.35.

Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo Begins TODAY!

After years of successful expos in Sydney and Melbourne, it's now Perth's turn.

The inaugural Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo will take place over three days (September 6-8) at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Travelling to get tattooed is not a viable option for most people, which is the beauty of these expos. The organisers do all the work instead, bringing artists from around Australia and the world right to your doorstep.

Whether you're looking at getting a portrait or abstract tattoo, Japanese, traditional or a black and grey tattoo the Perth expo has an abundance of tattoo artists to choose from. The growing list of artists includes a huge percentage of Western Australian-based artists, putting the talent of the west coast on display.

Tattoo expos are so much more than getting tattooed or watching people getting tattooed, and Perth will be no different. There will be a live band, burlesque performances, tattoo contests and a pin-up pageant.

My suggestions? The Lolly Bus to sugar yourself up before getting tattooed and the Sailor Jerry bar to grab a drink post-tattoo. Check out more information in the What's On section.

Don't waste time standing in line on the day, and trust me there WILL be lines, beat the queues and purchase your tickets online now. Need more incentive to buy them now? How does $5 off sound? Don't delay as online ticket sales will close prior to the start of the expo.

Inked Australia/NZ will be there covering the event for the magazine. You might just get your photo in the next issue.

For your chance to win one of five double passes to the expo, head to the Inked Australia/NZ Facebook page and answer the following question:
To win, tell us which artist you would like to see at one of the expos and why? (can be Australian or International)
[Entries close Monday August 19]

If this is your first tattoo expo experience, check out my post on Tattoo Expo Etiquette for some handy tips.

[TAP] Byron Drechsler

The collection of artists featured in the TAPs leading up to the Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo wouldn't be complete without Byron Drechsler.

Featured in countless tattoo magazines and the winner of several trophies for his work, Byron produces quality colour and black and grey portrait from his studio, Frontyard Tattoo in Mt Baker, South Australia. This weekend is your chance to see him tattoo in the flesh.

Byron's work ranges from portraits to the supernatural, with absolute stunning realism that leaves you wondering if you're looking at a photo or a tattoo.

Tomorrow is the first day of the inaugural Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo. If you're in the area and interested in tattoos, don't miss your chance to observe tattoo artists working their magic with needles and ink, or even get tattooed yourself.

[TAP] Sandra Ovenden

Just two of these TAPs left until the start of the Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo this Friday. Will you be there? Are you getting tattooed or entering any of the tattoo competitions?

Sandra's tattoos range from black and grey to colour, portraits, and traditional/neo-traditional pieces. What catches my eye from her Instagram feed are the beautiful female sketches she's done. Many artists stick with the same general theme and facial features when drawing original female forms, but Sandra's are all completely unique as are the fine details.

Check out the Adorned Empire booth at the expo to see Sandra in action or buy some of her prints.

[TAP] Beny Pearce (tat2beny)

There's only three more days until the Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo. Are you getting excited?

I haven't featured all that many portrait tattoo artists these past couple of weeks, so today's your lucky day. Portraits are not tattoos which just any artist can do; they require practice and skill. Luckily for those of you attending the expo, the likes of Benjamin Laukis, Arn Lyons, and today's TAP, Beny Pearce will be there.

Beny does some amazing black and grey realism and portrait tattoos, and is wishing to do more with colour.

Beny's just had a Friday spot open up at the expo, so if you'd like a tattoo from him, get in contact as soon as possible (preferably large pieces, the best idea will get the spot).

[TAP] Ryan Smith

Blackwork / dotwork tattoos along with geometric tattoos are those which I am beginning to see me of, online and in magazines. Today's featured TAP, Ryan Smith is well-versed in this style, in addition to colourful traditional and Japanese style tattoos.

Dotwork is quite interesting to watch as it is done using different tattoo techniques than the usual linework and colour of most tattoos. I suggest you stop by the Foothills Tattoo both at the Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo to see Ryan in action.

I know I just featured an artist from Foothills Tattoo yesterday, but all great tattooist surround themselves with other talented people. We might just see another pop up on the blog before the end of the week.

[TAP] Rory Pickersgill

Rory featured in a post from July where I listed the best tattoo artists in Australia to visit for Japanese style tattooing.  While I think his traditional tattoos are beautiful, I think it's Rory's Japanese work where his talent really shines.

Rory will be at the Perth Tattoo & Body Art Expo next weekend along with other artists from Foothills Tattoo, where he currently works. I'll be featuring a couple more artists from that studio later this week.

By the looks of this Facebook status, demand for tattoos at the expo is quite high, but if you'd like to get tattooed, it can't hurt to send an email in the event of a cancellation. The beauty of these expos is being able to observe these artists at work whether or not you get tattooed.
